Propane vs Butane

As the UK’s trade association for the LPG industry, Liquid Gas UK is urging people to stay safe and get to know the difference between propane and butane gas cylinders – especially when it comes to where and how they’re used.

While both are popular and versatile forms of LPG, using the wrong one in the wrong place can be unsafe. One of the biggest risks is bringing propane cylinders indoors, where they’re not designed to be used. This can create serious safety hazards, including carbon monoxide build-up and fire risk. (Only butane cylinders should be used indoors)

So, what’s the difference?

🔹 Propane works well in cold temperatures and is great for outdoor use – think BBQs, patio heaters, or gas boilers.

🔹 Butane is better suited to indoor portable heaters and leisure appliances like camping stoves for caravans – but doesn’t perform as well in the cold.

We’ve pulled together some simple Do’s and Don’ts to keep you and your loved ones safe:

General for both

Propane – DO:

✔ Use it for outdoor heating, cooking, and commercial use.

✔ Store it outside or in well-ventilated areas.

✔ Check for leaks with a soapy water solution.

✔ Follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Propane – DON’T:

✘ Don’t bring propane cylinders indoors.

✘ Don’t store them near heat or flames.

✘ Don’t smoke near cylinders.

✘ Don’t try to repair or replace the valves yourself.

Butane – DO:

✔ Use indoors with portable heaters or camping gear.

✔ Store in a cool, dry place.

✔ Check regularly for leaks and ensure ventilation.

✔ Follow appliance manufacturers instructions carefully.

Butane – DON’T:

✘ Don’t use it in very cold weather – it might not work properly.

✘ Don’t store near flames, heat, or ignition sources.

✘ Don’t use in small spaces without proper airflow.

✘ No smoking near cylinders.

✘ Don’t try to repair or replace the valves yourself.

Remember:

✔ Propane = Outdoor use               ✔ Butane = Indoor portable heating
