Public Affairs Manager, Liquid Gas UK

About the role

The appointment is maternity cover for an eighteen month period with the opportunity to progress within Liquid Gas UK after the successful completion of the maternity cover.

A proactive, tenacious and results-focused individual is required to deliver Liquid Gas UK’s public affairs activity during a critical time for the LPG and bioLPG industry, with regulations across the UK setting the future course for the industry due to be developed over the coming months and years.

Now is an exciting time for the Public Affairs Manager to be joining Liquid Gas UK as industry navigates its way through fast-paced policy changes, with significant opportunity for progression and being part of a team shaping the future of the sector.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Public Affairs Manager is responsible for developing and promoting Liquid Gas UK policy positions with regard to energy; namely domestic, commercial and industrial heat decarbonisation, industry resilience and the reform of the EPC methodology.

This includes the analysis of information to support the position, development of appropriate arguments and the delivery of these to relevant industry stakeholders, officials, parliamentarians and Ministers in UK Government and the Devolved Administrations, by building relationships, running an engagement programme and by responding to consultations.

The role requires the ability to refine relevant policy proposals, understand their nuances, and likely impact on the LPG industry, and source relevant supporting information and data. Equally important is the ability to communicate these to, and synthesise the views of, Liquid Gas UK members through the Public Affairs Strategy Group, of which you will provide secretariat, and present the outcome persuasively, both in written and verbal form.

Additionally the role will support the Chief Executive on strategic projects or operational matters that the Board consider fall within the remit of the Trade Association.

The role is home-based; however, the job requires travel to London and periodic travel elsewhere in the UK and Europe.

  • Strong planning and organisation skills.

  • Capable of listening to, and making arguments, and developing a summary and consensus position.
  • Must be mature and confident enough to lead arguments with internal industry teams and external bodies.
  • Ability to understand implications of policy whilst being willing and capable of delving into necessary detail to develop industry responses.
  • Excellent communicator, turning complex information into straightforward communications, both verbally and written, for internal and external consumption.
  • Empathetic to member, policy maker and public concerns and perspectives.
  • Enthusiastic and willing to become involved in wider trade association work.

Job details

  • Build and maintain relationships with policy and political stakeholders across the four UK nations, to effectively influence and inform policy
  • Develop and promote Liquid Gas UK positions on public policy
  • Prepare detailed, evidenced responses to consultations and committee inquiries
  • Engage our LPG Industry members in shaping policy and update them via the Liquid Gas UK newsletter, magazine and other outlets
  • Provide secretariat to the Public Affairs Strategy Group (PASG)
  • Create high quality policy reports and briefings for membership and external audiences
  • Carry out efficient and thorough horizon scanning for policy developments
  • Work alongside team members, public affairs agency and PR agency colleagues to deliver clear policy messages to a wider audience
  • Support the CEO on strategic projects, industry initiatives and operational matters

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years public affairs or policy experience
  • Trade association or Energy experience would be advantageous
  • Undergraduate Degree in related discipline (Public Policy, Politics, Economics) would be desirable

About us

Liquid Gas UK is the trade association for the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and biopropane (bioLPG) industry in the UK, representing companies who are LPG producers, distributors, equipment and service providers, and installers. It is dedicated to the safe and effective development of LPG and takes a leading role in consultation and negotiation with legislators and policy makers. There are circa 100 members of Liquid Gas UK and member companies cover 99% of the total LPG distributed in the UK.

The organisation consists of a friendly and hard-working team of seven employees including this role.
