The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF), the trade association representing the building materials sector across the UK and Ireland, has issued new safety guidance for its members on the storage, marking, transportation and disposal of LPG and propylene non-refillable cylinders — with support from Liquid Gas UK.
The new guidance provides clear, practical advice for builders, plumbers’ merchants and other retailers who procure, store, and sell LPG cylinders and cartridges. It aims to help ensure safe handling practices and compliance with UK health and safety legislation, including the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) and the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016.
Developed in collaboration with Liquid Gas UK, the guidance reflects best practice drawn from several of the association’s Codes of Practice, including:
Code of Practice 7 – Storage of Full and Empty LPG Cylinders and Cartridges
Code of Practice 27 – The Carriage of LPG Cylinders by Road & Hazard Information Labelling Requirements
Code of Practice 33 – Use of LPG Cylinders
By setting out the differences between non-refillable cylinders and portable gas cartridges, and clarifying requirements for labelling, separation distances, and transport limits, the document seeks to reduce confusion and improve safety across the supply chain.
Both organisations emphasise that safety and compliance are shared responsibilities. Each business must assess risks at their sites, ensure staff are competent, and maintain suitable fire precautions and emergency procedures.
Liquid Gas UK is pleased to have supported the BMF in the creation of this guidance, which will help strengthen safety standards across the building materials sector and ensure LPG continues to be used safely and responsibly.
The full guidance is available to BMF members via the federation’s website at www.bmf.org.uk.
