New LPG depot in Yorkshire is renewable ready

Northern Energy, a fourth-generation family-owned business delivering over 50 million litres of LPG to its domestic and commercial customers annually, is investing £12 million in a new depot located in Yorkshire.

The state-of-the-art facility has capacity to store 360,000 litres of LPG in three tanks, with one third of the capacity prepared for storage of renewable liquid gases in the future.

Driven by company expansion, the development of the new depot allows Northern Energy to futureproof its operations and respond more effectively to any potential short-term supply shocks.

James Illingworth, Commercial Director of Northern Energy, said: “The infrastructure means we can seamlessly blend renewable liquid gases into our fuel mix, as customer demand grows.

“As an independent family business supplying mostly off-grid areas, Northern Energy plays an important role in rural energy resilience. This expansion will allow us to continue providing excellent services to our customers,” Mr Illingworth says.

Although LPG is already the lowest carbon traditional fuel available, renewable liquid gases, produced from sustainable feedstocks such as waste oils, plant matter, and food industry by-products, offer even greater potential carbon emissions reduction of up to 92% compared to oil by 2040.

Renewable liquid gases are chemically identical to LPG and can be seamlessly integrated into existing boilers and appliances, offering a cost-effective, drop-in solution for off-grid homes and businesses in the North. This flexibility reduces the need for expensive infrastructure upgrades, particularly in older properties that are hard to retrofit and decarbonise through electrification due to issues such as limited grid capacity.

The trade association for the LPG and renewable liquid gases industry, Liquid Gas UK, welcomes news of the depot expansion.

Having long advocated for a mixed technology approach to Net Zero, the organisation says renewable liquid gases expand the range of options for off-grid properties to decarbonise.
