BioLPG transition cuts forklift emissions by up to 47% without compromising performance

Ramco, a leading asset disposal and reuse company, has reduced forklift carbon emissions by up to 47% when compared to diesel, by switching part of its fleet to bioLPG.

Transitioning to a 40% bioLPG blend has also saved Ramco 11.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year compared to remaining on a 100% LPG supply.

The Lincolnshire-based business specialises in the sale and refurbishment of industrial equipment. They’ve been supplied by Calor since 2024, and the shift to bioLPG was made as part of a broader move in the logistics sector toward more sustainable energy solutions.

Adrian Foreman, Head of Operations at Ramco, says: “Our forklifts are essential for moving a wide range of equipment, from decommissioned military boats to large plant and machinery.

“The switch to bioLPG was driven by our commitment to sustainability, but it also needed to be practical.

"With bioLPG we get a reliable fuel which maintains a high-level of performance and reduces our carbon footprint.”

Because bioLPG is a ‘like for like’ fuel with LPG, it can be used as a drop-in solution within existing forklift trucks, with no changes to the machinery needed.

“It was a seamless transition," Mr Foreman adds.

Liam Cameron, Sustainability Supervisor at Ramco, says: “Here at Ramco, our focus is on giving things a new life, refurbishing, repurposing and reselling working equipment that could otherwise end up in waste streams.

“Whether it’s gym equipment, shipping containers, catering kit, or even nuclear reactor control panels, we’ve had some really unusual things through our warehouse. A standout example was the fleet of nearly 2,000 MoD generators that had reached the end of their useful life.

“We fitted new control panels, refurbished or replaced alternators and sold them both in the UK and around the world, delivering a good return for our client and giving new life to some old but still useful assets.”

Mr Cameron adds: “Sustainability is at the heart of our operations at Ramco, so switching to bioLPG was an obvious choice.”

George Webb, CEO of Liquid Gas UK, the trade association for LPG and renewable liquid gases, says businesses with logistics-heavy operations need flexible, portable, low carbon fuel. This includes warehouses and sites using forklift trucks.
