Just add pancakes, a sprinkle of sugar and your trusty gas hob

Monday 28th February 2022

1st March is Pancake Day and the perfect opportunity to dust off your pancake making skills and get creative in the kitchen.

There’s nothing quite a satisfying as the perfect pancake flip, and you can be sure of the perfect pancake if you’re making them on your gas hob this year. Let’s face it, we all know the best pancakes are cooked on gas. It heats to temperature immediately and allows you to make the most delicious slim line crepe, chunky American pancake or even one of the Japanese layered varieties. Have you tasted one yet?

Savoury Pancakes

A savoury pancake is made in just the same way as a normal pancake with a basic batter of flour, eggs and milk. Sometimes people use buckwheat flour but really either will do, unless you’re making an American pancake in which case you will need to use self-flour to make it a little bit chunkier.

Typical toppings for a savoury pancake include cheese, slices of ham, eggs, small chunks of chicken or even tuna.

Sweet pancakes

No sweet pancake is complete without a coating of something deliciously sweet like maple syrup, cinnamon sugar or even your favourite ice cream. Keep the consistency thin and our top tip is to include a little bit of sugar along with a bit of melted butter in the mixture.

Pancake making tips

Making up your batter mixture ahead of time will not only save time when it comes to making your pancakes, it will also mean the mixture is settled and at its best when you get started.

When you start frying make sure you get the pan nice and hot on your gas hob but not smoking hot – it’s more likely to stick then and also get brown too quickly. We do recommend frying the first side a little bit longer to ensure it has a bit more of a crisp base to make that all important flip possible.

Add a little bit of unsalted butter to your pan and ensure it’s melted through before you get started.

A good quality, heavy bottomed frying pan is your friend when it comes to pancake making in addition to a non-stick base which will making flipping so much easier. Trust me!

Finally just enjoy the process, cracking eggs, mixing batter and spending time in the kitchen whether on your own or with your family is such a nice thing to do to mark the start of lent and use up all of the ingredients you might have lurking about in the kitchen.

If you decide to have a go, please share photos we’d love to see!
