As the UK accelerates its journey to Net Zero, the way we heat our homes is undergoing a major transformation. For many urban households, heat pumps will play a central role in this transition. But for the 15% of homes off the main gas grid - often located in rural areas - the journey ahead is less straightforward.
These homes typically rely on traditional fuels like oil and LPG. While heat pumps offer a low-carbon solution, they’re not always viable for rural properties. In fact, up to 36% of off-grid homes face technical or financial barriers to installing one, due to factors like poor building fabric and limited grid capacity. Without tailored solutions, rural communities risk being left behind in the energy transition.
That’s why Liquid Gas UK has launched the Ready for Renewable campaign - to raise awareness of renewable liquid gases (RLGs) as a practical, affordable, and inclusive solution for rural decarbonisation.
RLGs are produced from sustainable sources and offer significant carbon savings. BioLPG, for example, delivers up to 92% carbon savings compared to oil, and up to 90% compared to conventional LPG. Crucially, it’s a drop-in fuel - meaning it can be used in existing boilers and stored in current infrastructure, with no need for costly upgrades. This means RLGs can provide a seamless transition for rural homes and businesses. They’re also vital for sectors like hospitality and agriculture, where electrification may not be feasible due to operational demands.
But the benefits of RLGs go beyond carbon savings. The industry is investing heavily in infrastructure and innovation, with £1 billion projected investment over this decade. Looking ahead, the RLG sector is projected to contribute £1.3 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) by 2050 and support over 12,500 green jobs - many of which will be based in rural communities.
To help policymakers and stakeholders better understand the impact of off-grid heating in their constituencies, the campaign website features an interactive heat map. This tool allows users to explore local data, see which companies are operating in their area, and learn more about the decarbonisation options available to their constituents.
The transition to Net Zero must be inclusive. With the right support and awareness, renewable liquid gases can play a vital role in ensuring that rural Britain isn’t left behind – and we are prepared to lead the way in delivering a cleaner, fairer energy future.
