2024 Report: LGUK Response to Biomass Strategy

Discover How Renewable Liquid Gases (RLGs) are Transforming the Future of Rural Heating

A new report from energy consultancy Gemserv has found that gasifying waste-based feedstocks, such as municipal solid waste (MSW), to produce biogases is an effective method to decarbonise properties that are not connected to the gas network.

Welcome to the future of sustainable energy for off-grid properties. As the UK continues its journey toward achieving net-zero emissions, Renewable Liquid Gases (RLGs) are emerging as a key solution for decarbonising homes and businesses that are not connected to the gas network.

Our latest report, conducted by energy consultancy Gemserv, highlights the crucial role that RLGs—produced from waste-based feedstocks—can play in reducing carbon emissions and providing a cost-effective, reliable alternative to traditional heating methods.

Key Findings:

  • Up to 92% Carbon Reduction: RLGs offer a significant reduction in carbon emissions, making them the lowest carbon conventional fuel available for off-grid properties.
  • Cost-Effective Heating: RLGs provide the lowest levelized cost of heat, making them an economically viable option for rural homes that are challenging to decarbonise.
  • Ease of Transition: Consumers can continue using their existing LPG boilers, switching to RLGs as they become available, with no need for expensive infrastructure changes.
  • Circular Economy Benefits: RLGs are produced from waste-based feedstocks, such as municipal solid waste, supporting a circular economy and contributing to the decarbonisation of the waste lifecycle.
