Christmas is arguably a poultry farms busiest season; this was certainly the case for one of Cumbria’s biggest chicken farms last December.
Home to more than three million of these domestic fowl, it is essential that the farm – based in Penrith - ensures its chicken sheds are suitably heated to allow their inhabitants to develop and grow.
If it hadn’t been for the excellent customer service provided by its LPG supplier that month, the festivities could have been a very different affair for its thousands of customers.
The farm owner – who opened his shed doors in 1974 – explained: ‘I can count on one hand the times we have forgotten to order gas but one Christmas we did! Fortunately for us, we had a call from our LPG supplier to ask us why we hadn’t and that was when the penny dropped! We hadn’t! As it was such an important time for us, I asked what could be done although by this stage it was Christmas Eve. Within three hours a delivery had been made, proof that our supplier has a flexible and responsive approach not only on a day to day basis but also in moments of crisis!’
The relationship between farm and supplier has prospered over the years; initially, LPG was identified because it was a cheaper option than oil for heating its chicken sheds. More than 40 years later, the level of service has dramatically exceeded cost, making it the number one factor in the purchasing decision.
